753722_21410936Earlier today (Wednesday) United Airlines reported that a network connectivity issue affected about 4,900 flights. Even though the issue seems to have been resolved, ramifications are expected to last through Wednesday and even into Thursday.

In an unrelated issue, the New York Stock Exchange halted trading for 3 hours as it experienced an outage of its own. Similar to the United case, an internal technical issue was to blame. Neither issue was thought to be malicious, which is actually pretty worrying.

An issue like this is a large scale example of the sensitivity of a business’s technology. Not staying on top of networks, devices, applications and maintenance, and security standards leave more room for error that neither businesses or their customers can afford.

Technology can streamline and automate a business. However, as this latest incident suggests, not being proactive with a business’s technology is only opening doors for error.
