Apple released iOS 10 this past Tuesday September 13. iOS 10 is packed with many new features. Here are a few of the new and updated features that users can enjoy with Apple iOS 10.
iOS 10 compatibility
iOS10 works with iPad 4th generation, iPad air, iPad pro, iPad mini, iPhone 5 or any generation higher.
iOS 10 home screen
Apple redesigned the iPhone and iPad lock screen. Users now press the home button to open their phone instead of sliding to unlock their phone. What’s also been added is the ability to raise your iPhone to wake it. This fixes the issue of blowing past lockscreen notifications when you hit the fast TouchID home button. Notifications are broken up into bubbles now and use 3D Touch to show hidden menu actions. 3D Touch-enables iOS 10 notifications work even better for messages. You can immediately respond to messages as soon as you pick up your phone, without ever leaving the lock screen. There is also the ability to clear all of your old notifications with 3D Touch. Swiping them away one by one or dismissing them in groups is time-consuming and with iOS 10 users just hard press that little “x” icon within the redesigned notifications pulldown menu and tap the “clear all” box that pops up.
iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are water-resistant, but all other iPhones are not.
iOS 10 will warn of possible water damage and provide instructions.
Control Center is decluttered
The control center is decluttered and swipe-up-from-the-bottom menus is now split into several panels. It is broken into: quick settings, media playback and Apple Home. There are touch detection issues for brightness slider vs sliding between panels. The swipe-up-from-the-bottom Control Center overlay menu has a brand new look that helps declutters the layout in iOS 10.
Talk to Siri normally
You don’t have to talk like a robot to your robot phone. Siri can understand things that can be said in a variety of ways. Users no longer have to deal with siri not comprehending their requests. Siri is more easily adaptable to different voices and is programmed to accommodate different user requests.
Photos with advanced computer vision
iOS 10 automatically pieces together photo albums for you. It creates mini-movies filled with video and photos, complete with titles. There is the added photos app’s ability to create albums based on face recognition, and can do the same for object and scene recognition. Apple plans to take Photos to an even higher level with Memories which are supposed to remind you of events in life by clustering together photos into trips, people and topics.
Apple Maps is way better
With Apple Maps you are free to look ahead to the next turn without springing back into place or free to zoom and explore nearby points of interest. iOS 10 fixes the biggest complaint about Apple Maps with its inability to scroll ahead on a route. You are now free to pan and zoom around the map with the new Apple Maps update. Apple is also incorporating iOS 10 information from other apps into Maps. If it knows you go to work at a certain time, it’ll make a suggestion for the route, or make one based on a calendar event address.
This is a new app that combines together all of household devices such as control lights, door locks, alarms and even blinds. Also from the lockscreen, you can peek at home notifications if you get a doorbell alert. Peek into the notification by hard pressing on the bubble and a video doorbell like ring will give you a live camera view.
Emojis are three times bigger and it’s easy to replace words with emojis. iOS 10 can now suggest which words in your text you can substitute for a corresponding emoji. After writing your message, tap on the emoji button and every instance where a word can be replaced by an emoji will be highlighted. Simply tap to replace and send your emojified message. You can write out individual messages to or draw a picture to send to your friends. There is a ton of new emojis that have been added as well. You can send stickers, gifs, and added screen effects.
Apple has integrated song lyrics in iOS 10. So you can sing to a song and never have to leave apple music. When listening to a specific song, pull up to reveal the lyrics module. Here you can expand or hide the full lyrics.
